Every credible ICF program meets the same minimum standard set by the International Coaching Federation, so the real difference lies in six factors. Use these as your checklist when comparing options.

1. The right ICF accreditation level

ICF accredits training at Level 1, the pathway to the ACC credential, and Level 2, the pathway to the PCC credential. Confirm the program is accredited at the level that matches your goal before you look at anything else.

2. MCC-led faculty

The trainer’s own credential sets your ceiling. A program led by an ICF MCC (Master Certified Coach), the highest ICF credential, means your mentor coaching and feedback come from someone at the top of the profession. 3. Depth of coaching methodology

ICF sets the competencies; the methodology is how you learn to apply them. 4. Mentor coaching and performance evaluation

ICF requires 10 hours of mentor coaching with an ICF-credentialed mentor plus a performance evaluation. The best programs include both, delivered by the lead faculty rather than outsourced to a third party.

5. Post-program support and community

Credentialing runs over several months. Look for ICF application filing support, exam guidance, and an ongoing practice community, so you are supported from enrolment to credential and well beyond it.

6. Cost and value

Price matters, but value matters more. Compare what is actually included: the certificates, the mentor coaching hours, the practice labs, and the duration of support, not just the headline fee.

If you are starting out, you need a Level 1 program. It must provide a minimum of 60 coach-specific training hours, mentor coaching and a performance evaluation, and it leads to the ICF ACC credential once you complete 100 coaching hours and pass the ACC exam.
