Achieve Greater Success by Consciously Staying in the Present
The fundamental belief of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is that all actions performed by humans are based on the use of a representational system, which is basically the five human senses – Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Olfactory, and Gustatory. Three of the five senses: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic (VAK) in Neuro-Linguistic Programming play a cardinal role in mind processing. Some human actions are based on external events: which we can see, hear or feel based in real-time, and some are based on internal representations: imaginary images, voices, or feelings. By consciously being aware of VAK, we can utilize the power of being in the ‘Present’. Someone once said, ” achieve greater success by consciously staying in the present “, and to do that requires constant awareness.
Man is condemned to wallow in the past and obsess about the future.
The past is just that, the past, and should be left alone. Many of us have a tendency to relive past experiences, think about situations that are not relevant anymore, think about things that could have been done differently in order to change an outcome…
The Past is a bottomless abyss, and once you dwell deep in it, it pulls you down further. Instead of letting your past affect you adversely, respect your past, as past experiences help define a person’s personality, and provides experience to act in the present and future situations.
Similarly, one’s future is a chimera, something that cannot be predicted well in advance. That is not to say don’t plan ahead, but constantly thinking about something which is not in your direct control will hamper the outcome you have planned. It is important to set a future goal, but by obsessing about the goal, there is a chance that you might miss the power of the ‘Present’.
What truly matters, therefore, is the quality of attention we bring to the present moment. The present is the only point where perception, choice, and action intersect. From an NLP perspective, when we become conscious of what we are seeing, hearing, and feeling right now, we regain authorship over our internal experience. Instead of being unconsciously driven by old images from the past or imagined fears of the future, we begin to respond deliberately to what is actually happening. This heightened sensory awareness anchors us in reality, allowing clearer thinking, calmer emotional states, and more effective decision-making.
Mastery of the present does not require rejecting the past or abandoning the future; it requires placing them in their proper context. The past becomes a reference, not a residence. The future becomes a direction, not a destination to mentally inhabit. By consciously engaging our Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic awareness in the now, we create a stable internal platform from which meaningful change can occur. In this space, learning accelerates, habits can be reshaped, and actions align more naturally with intention-making the present moment not just a passing point in time, but a powerful place of choice and transformation.

In any given situation, the mind wants to relate to some past event – most often things that didn’t go well, or the mind tries to improve a situation based on knowledge derived from prior experience. Obsessing about the future – trying to force your mind against what it wants to think, will take the power of the ‘Present’ away. Make a conscious effort to stay in the ‘Present’, as you won’t dwell about past issues/problems, nor will it make you anxious as you won’t go into future problem scenarios as they have not happened yet.
Remember to live in the moment – it will increase the chances of you taking control of your life, achieving set goals, and leading a happy life.
In short, focus on the ‘Present’ and ‘Design the life you want.’
