What happens when we are sad, depressed and ready to give up on life? We slow down, we cry, we hunch, we curl up. We feel scared, because of the meaning making process of our mind. Anyways, to deal with these emotions, the thinking brain looks back in the past for references, to see if there was a similar experience before, and how it was resolved. It does exactly what it did the last time. Which is why there is a saying that ‘history repeats’. Because in that minute neither your brain nor your heart functions, and the subconscious (which is a tool of survival) take charge because the rational, conscious mind is confused and too drowned in agony to bother.

Which is why when in pain, we become the worst decision makers.

So how do we overcome? How to manage stress using NLP? Human beings can change themselves by adapting either:

  1. Thoughts
  2. Feelings
  3. Actions i.e. External behavior

Let’s talk about thoughts and feelings first. Changing your thought or any feeling you have is possible, but you need to be consciously aware of what you are thinking and feeling each minute. Mindfulness and meditation are powerful ways to root ourselves in the present. This is also an area where you can get people to help you – a therapist or coach can help you resolve your feelings and help you implant supportive and empowering thoughts. NLP works primarily in this area. NLP is about changing the thoughts and feelings regarding certain contexts or situations so that you can manage it consciously – not on auto-pilot programs of your unempowering thoughts.

While changing thoughts and behaviors require quite a lot of awareness and ‘willpower’, there is a much easier way to changing the mood you are in. Changing your external environment is much more powerful than you can imagine. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has the highest rate of success because of the community created around an honorable ideal of taking back control of life and not be addicted to alcohol. Attending an AA will remind an alcoholic about why it is important to turn away from alcohol. It reminds them of the pain they and their family went through when they were addicted. AA meetings also give them the positive stories and encouragement needed to push through the next week – this stops them from relapsing when the going gets tough.

One can take the proven strategy of AA and apply it in one’s life. You can have an ‘Accountability companion’ – someone who keeps you accountable for executing the plans you put in place. You can also find accountability coaches who will help you create strategies to ensure that you succeed.

You can also set up reminders for yourself – the next time you find yourself slipping into a negative pattern, remember to get away from that situation immediately. Force yourself to meet a few supportive friends or go for a trip or even to a temple. Anything that will get you to break away from reinforcing that negative pattern. Decide on one thing you can do and do it immediately – without giving your mind any time to come up with excuses not to do the break state activity. Do that one thing as soon as you find yourself starting to go down the old lane of negativity.

Once you have effectively reduced the pull the negative patterns have on you, start creating positive patterns or habits. Start small, baby steps. Read something positive for half an hour. Keep an alarm to ensure you are not binge-watching Netflix. Ensure you have something planned that’s fun each day.
